What Are KITAS and KITAP?

KITAS (Kartu Izin Tinggal Terbatas) is a temporary residence permit allowing foreign nationals to remain in Indonesia for 6 months to 2 years, depending on visa type and purpose of stay.

KITAP (Kartu Izin Tinggal Tetap) is a permanent residence permit for those who have legally resided in Indonesia under a KITAS for an extended period. The KITAP remains valid for 5 years and may be renewed indefinitely.

Types of KITAS and Eligibility Criteria

Work KITAS

  • Employed by an Indonesian company
  • Requires valid work contract, RPTKA, and company sponsorship
  • Duration: 6 months to 2 years

Investor KITAS

  • Foreign investors establishing or owning a PT PMA in Indonesia
  • Requires proof of investment and company registration documents
  • Duration: 1 to 5 years, extendable

Spouse KITAS

  • Foreign nationals married to Indonesian citizens
  • Requires marriage certificate and spousal sponsorship
  • Duration: 1 to 2 years, extendable

Retirement KITAS

  • Foreign nationals aged 55 and above
  • Requires proof of pension or income and health insurance
  • Duration: 1 year, extendable up to 5 years

Family KITAS

  • Dependents of KITAS holders
  • Requires proof of relationship and primary holder's sponsorship
  • Duration: Aligned with primary KITAS holder's permit

Transitioning from KITAS to KITAP

Eligibility requirements vary by KITAS type:

  • Work KITAS: After 5 consecutive years
  • Investor KITAS: After 3 consecutive years
  • Spouse KITAS: After 2 consecutive years of marriage
  • Retirement KITAS: After 4 consecutive years

Applications must be submitted while the KITAS remains valid with at least 30 days before expiration.

Application Process for KITAS and KITAP

KITAS Application

  1. Obtain a VITAS through the Indonesian embassy or evisa.imigrasi.go.id portal
  2. Enter Indonesia with the VITAS
  3. Apply for ITAS within 30 days at the local immigration office
  4. Receive KITAS card after ITAS approval

KITAP Application

  1. Verify eligibility criteria
  2. Gather required documents including passport, KITAS, and sponsor letter
  3. Submit application through local immigration office or online portal
  4. Processing typically takes several months
  5. Receive KITAP card upon approval

Important Considerations

  • KITAS extensions must be submitted before expiration
  • KITAP holders receive a Multiple Entry Re-Entry Permit (MERP) for multiple entries and exits
  • KITAP holders married to Indonesian citizens may work under certain conditions
  • Dependents of KITAP holders may qualify for KITAP under family reunification provisions
